BAM ensures safe oxygen cylinder filling with FLIR thermal imaging camera

We all breathe oxygen. Without it life as we know it would not be possible. But oxygen, especially when pressurized, can be extremely dangerous. It is highly reactive and can form chemical bonds with almost all other elements. Pressurized oxygen is used in chemical plants and iron ore smelting, but also in hospitals and for scuba diving. To ensure user safety all equipment and components that come into contact with pressurized oxygen therefore need to be thoroughly tested. This is the task of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), Berlin, Germany, working group ‘Safe Handling of Oxygen’.

Thermal imaging camera helps improve hypersonic aerodynamic designs

For the purpose of space exploration and aircraft technologies, researchers have explored travelling at hypersonic speeds, which entails attaining speeds over Mach 5, more than five times the speed of sound. This puts a huge strain on the aerodynamic and thermal designs of vessels and components. To test components and their capability to withstand airflows at such velocities, the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom combines their hypersonic wind tunnel with a thermal imaging camera from FLIR Systems.

Non-contact sociologic research with thermal imaging cameras

Researchers that want to study neurovascular elements of human social interaction are often confronted with the limitations of commonly used methods in neuroscience. They often involve the application of electrodes or other contact measurement instruments on the skin of the test subjects, which interferes with spontaneous behavior. Non-contact methods, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, involve subjecting test subjects to active radiation and require the test subjects to remain still for extended periods of time.

Nordic district heating networks monitored from the sky with thermal imaging

District heating is a system for distributing heat generated in a centralized location for residential and commercial heating. Hot water or steam is distributed to households and companies through an underground network of pipes. District heating can potentially help to reduce a city's carbon footprint by increasing the efficiency of heating systems throughout the entire city. According to some researchers district heating is the cheapest method for a city to cut on carbon emissions.

Thermal imaging cameras help preserve Italy’s cultural heritage

Historical architecture is an important part of Italy’s cultural heritage, so good maintenance of these buildings is crucial for their preservation. No-one would want the Cathedral of Gravina in Puglia to deteriorate into a ruin, for instance. That is why the Altamura, Italy, based survey company IR HotSpot investigates historical buildings with a FLIR thermal imaging camera, looking for water damage and other building defects.

Thermal imaging camera helps develop new cryogenic fuel tank design

Fuel is a crucial part of space technology, it is necessary to propel the spacecraft but adding more fuel makes the spacecraft heavier and therefore less economic in its propulsion. Spacecraft designers continually face this dilemma. One of the best solutions current technology has to offer is the use of cryogenic fuel, due to its excellent energy to mass ratio.

FLIR thermal imaging camera allows evaluation of laminar designs

Air flowing across an airplane's wings will provide the lift that is essential for flight, but it also causes friction and drag, which slows down the aircraft and causes inefficient propulsion. Laminar air flow along an airplane's wings can theoretically greatly reduce drag, improving the airplane's efficiency.
