How far can you see

Often, the first question that people interested in buying a thermal imaging camera ask is “How far can I see?” This is a very reasonable question to ask, but it defies any simple answer. All FLIR Systems thermal imaging cameras are able to see the sun which is more than 146 million kilometers away from Earth. But it would be totally wrong to say that all FLIR Systems thermal imaging cameras can detect security threats at this distance.

Digital Detail Enhancement (DDE)

The performance of an IR imaging system is often classified by its detection range. This of course makes a lot of sense for security & surveillance systems as the user will want to know how far he will still be able to “see” or detect an object such as a man or a vehicle. In practice however, it can be very hard to detect targets even though they are within the theoretical limits of the system.

Cooled versus uncooled cameras for long range surveillance

Long-range surveillance in low-light conditions or total darkness is a perfect application for thermal imaging technology. This type of surveillance is often required at borders or for large perimeters where most threats occur at night.
