Detecting Trichloroethylene (TCE) Industrial Solvent

The volatile organic compound Trichloroethylene (TCE) was used as an anesthetic from 1940 to 1960, until concerns over its toxicity and carcinogenic potential prompted doctors to abandon the practice. A variety of industrial and commercial companies use TCE as an effective solvent and degreaser – including NASA, which once used TCE to clean large rocket engines that burned kerosene. TCE is water-soluble, migrating easily from contaminated soil to groundwater where it can remain for years.
