FLIR Solutions for a Post-COVID World

From elevated skin temperature screening to touchless pedestrian crossings, FLIR cameras are some of the products you'll be seeing a lot of in the future as we all adapt and find new ways to keep public spaces safe and operational. Keep reading to find out how FLIR solutions are being used to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 in airports, hospitals, retail spaces, and beyond.

Elevated Skin Temperature Screening

Instead of requiring direct or close contact for a temperature reading, thermal cameras are designed to detect infrared radiation (heat) from a distance and display it as an easily interpreted image. FLIR thermal cameras are commonly used as a non-contact screening tool to detect differences in skin surface temperatures to help determine who needs a medical check for fever, which can be a sign of infection. Thermal imaging must always be followed up with further screening before authorities decide to quarantine a person.

The screening procedures implemented at airports, hospitals, offices, factories, and other institutions are a non-invasive way to help catch infections and prevent disruptions due to COVID-19. While any plan needs to be specific to the building, many organizations have set up a FLIR thermal camera on a tripod at the entryway to screen people as they come in. As people enter the building, they simply stop briefly at a marked point in front of the camera for a quick screening.

Occupancy management solutions

FLIR people-counting solutions can help retail spaces support social distancing and prevent overcrowding by automatically keeping track of how many people are in a space. Real-time customer-facing displays alert people of occupancy limits and when the space has reached capacity, saving employee time and easing customer concerns.

FLIR occupancy solutions are powered by Brickstream people-tracking cameras, which utilize best-in-class stereo vision to track occupants in an anonymous and unobtrusive fashion to protect consumer privacy while still preventing overcrowding in stores. Cameras are installed in the ceiling over each entrance/exit, and a master camera calculates occupancy in real time by collecting the enter/exit counts from all cameras at the location.

What camera do you need?

As our society adapts to the current conditions, FLIR solutions are one way to help keep people, businesses, and other important institutions safe and operational. If your facilities management team already uses thermal imaging in their daily routines, you may already have what you need to start screening people for elevated skin temperatures. Appropriate FLIR camera models include the Exx-Series, the T-Series, and A-Series cameras.

New elevated skin temperature thermal screening solutions have also entered the market. The FLIR Axxx-ESTFLIR T5xx-EST, and FLIR Exx-EST series cameras are designed to simplify the screening process, reducing the burden on screening operators and adhering to recommended social distancing guidelines.

In addition, the Occupancy Management Solution for FLIR Brickstream 3D Gen2 was recently released to automate occupancy counting within high-traffic and capacity-limited areas.
