Raymarine Wrap up Raymarine Angler Wins Bassmaster Angler of the Year Tournament

Raymarine Pro Ambassador Chris Zaldain of San Jose, California dominated the Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year Championship Tournament held last weekend in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Chris took the bait amongst the top 50 anglers in the country with a final total catch of 53.4 pounds, beating the next closest competitor by nearly three pounds.

“My Raymarine CHIRP DownVision sonar was the biggest thing for me,” said Zaldain in a post-tournament interview. “I was able to pick out these table-top sized boulders that were in about 16 to 18-feet of water. With CHIRP DownVision I could see those smallmouth [bass] were tucked right up against the edge of the boulders, making it easy for me to pick them off with a swim-bait and a drop shot.”

Zaldain’s winning strategy focused on bass that were feeding on suspended school of alewives. Thanks to the clarity and preciseness of his Raymarine CHIRP DownVision, he confirmed the bass hovered just below the baitfish. His successful approach consistently brought in big bags of fish, climbing him to the top spot by the end of the final day.

This was Zaldain’s first Bassmaster Elite Series win where he also earned $30,000 in winnings and secured a spot in the 2016 Bassmaster Classic. He finished the 2015 season in 6th place overall out of a field of 113 anglers.
