How does FLIR test its thermal camera cores and lenses for sealing to IP67? Is a vacuum test used?

PathFindIR II is the only FLIR Cores product that meets or exceeds an IP67 rating. The Tau wide field of view (WFOV) lenses are designed to be compatible with bulkhead sealing when used with an appropriate O-ring, however the camera itself is not sealed behind the flat surface of the lens holder.

The last digit of an IP rating refers to the liquid ingress parameter. For IP67, the ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time. The test conditions include immersion at a depth of 1m for 30 minutes.

FLIR uses a vacuum test to satisfy the IP67 rating based on the following:

  • 1 meter of water = 1.42 psi = 2.9 inches of Hg.

  • We draw 25 inches of Hg = 8.6 meters of water.

  • By increasing the pressure specification by > 8X for 2 minutes, we infer meeting IP67 for 30 minutes.
