RS8480

HD MWIR range science camera for long-range radiometric measurement

Designed for researchers, engineers, and scientists using long-range imaging who need to extract more information from distant and fast-moving objects, the FLIR RS8480 brings 1280 × 1024 HD MWIR imaging to the proven RS-Series.

With four times the pixels of a 640 × 512 detector and 2× the linear sampling across the object, it delivers the spatial detail needed to detect, identify, and measure with greater confidence in applications ranging from missile and rocket testing to target signature, plume analysis, and large-scale outdoor research.

A continuous 50-250 mm metric zoom, extendable to 150-750 mm with the optional 3× afocal multiplier, puts that detail to work across demanding distances, while calibrated radiometric data from every pixel and every frame turns imagery into defensible measurement. Range-grade timing, synchronized acquisition, and the familiar FLIR Research Studio workflow make the RS8480 easy to integrate into established test environments, all within the rugged, IP65-rated chassis.

With the RS8480, you don’t just see the object—you measure it.

Four Times the Detail. Same Range Setup.
With 1280 × 1024 HD MWIR resolution, the RS8480 delivers four times the pixels of a 640 × 512 detector and 2× the linear sampling across the objects. That means more detail where it matters—helping teams detect, identify, track, and measure distant targets with greater confidence.
The RS8480 delivers calibrated radiometric data from every pixel, every frame, turning thermal imagery into data that can be quantified, synchronized, and analyzed. From target signatures and plume behavior to temperature and radiance, the result is evidence your test team can actually work with.
Keep the proven RS-Series platform, continuous 50-250 mm metric zoom, familiar mounting, calibration model, and FLIR Research Studio workflow—then extend your reach to 150-750 mm with the optional 3× afocal multiplier. More capability, without turning an HD upgrade into a new integration project.

Why Now · Pixels on Target

Distance takes away detail. Resolution puts it back.

Targets are small and far away. The pixels you put on an onject decide whether you detect, identify, and measure with confidence — or guess. VGA cooled cameras run out of detail at exactly the distances that matter.

Detect & identify sooner

More pixels across the target means cleaner edges, earlier classification, and fewer ambiguous tracks at long range.

Finer radiometry

Smaller ground-sample-distance per pixel sharpens signature, plume, and temperature measurement on the same optic.

No platform penalty

Until now, HD MWIR meant a bigger, different camera. The detail jump shouldn't cost you your proven range setup.

A New View · On Familiar Ground

New HD sensor. The RS platform you trust.

We combined a new HD MWIR sensor with the proven RS6780 chassis. The resolution is what changed — everything else that makes the platform range-ready stays the same.

1280 × 1024 HD MWIR

Four times the pixels of a 640 × 512 VGA detector — 2× linear sampling on target.

Hot MWIR SLS detector

8 µm pitch, 120 K operation, f/4, 3.4–5.1 µm. Warmer operation than legacy InSb/MCT means a 27,000-hour cooler MTBF.

Same continuous-zoom optics

50–250 mm metric zoom, extendable to 750 mm with the 3× afocal. The optics already in your fleet.

Same Research Studio workflow

Same calibrations, same acquisition and analysis software. No new toolchain to learn.

Resolution · Pixels on Target

When the object gets smaller, the answer shouldn’t.

The RS8480's 1280 × 1024 detector captures four times the pixels of 640 × 512 VGA and gives 2× linear sampling across the same object. That additional spatial information helps range teams preserve more detail at distance.

Radiometry · Data, Not Just Video

Seeing it is useful. Measuring it is the point.

The RS8480 outputs calibrated radiometric data per pixel, per frame, so every image can become quantitative information for temperature and radiance analysis rather than display imagery alone.

Factory calibration includes ambient drift compensation and accurate measurement through zoom. The standard temperature range covers 0°C to 350°C (32°F to 662°F), with measurement up to 3000°C using an ND filter on the 50–250 mm lens.

When the deliverable is a measurement, a picture isn’t enough.

Timing · Range-Grade Sync

On a test range, timing is
part of the measurement.

IRIG-B timing with less than 10 μs jitter, TSPI-accurate timestamping, trigger and sync I/O, tri-level sync, and lock-in support help place every frame in the wider test timeline and synchronize the RS8480 with other range instrumentation.
