There is no known or built-in limitation. A drawback with saving many images in the camera is that browsing files becomes slow, and that you loose overview.

We recommend that you do not save more than 1,000 images on the Card

Although a 1 GB card has a higher capacity than 1,000 images, saving more than that number of images severely slows down file management in the camera.
